Bali is an exotic and charming island. It blends spectacular mountain scenery and beautiful beaches with warm and friendly people. It also appeals through its sheer natural beauty of looming volcanoes and lush terraced rice fields that exude peace and serenity.
Combining elements of Hinduism and Buddhism with earlier animist beliefs, Balinese religion pervades all aspects of everyday life. Every human activity is approached with ritual and reverence.
It not only captures what is special about Indonesia but also has a uniqueness of its own.
If you are looking for peace and quite, then Ubud is the place to be. Stepped in culture and enhanced by magnificent vistas, Ubud offers a rich culture panorama and many activities. Besides the very popular dance-and-music shows, there are numerous courses on offer that allow you to become fully immersed in Balinese culture.
Around Ubud there are temples, ancient sites and whole villages producing handicrafts (albeit mostly for visitors). Although the growth of Ubud has engulfed several neighbouring villages, leading to an urban sprawl, parts of the surrounding countryside remain unspoiled, with lush rice paddies and towering coconut trees.
